Sangiovese

Castagna La Chiave

A world class Sangiovese that’s rich, deep and savoury. Biodynamic certified estate grown Sangiovese. Deep black dark red colour with a dark red hue. Emanating from the glass are spicy red currant and dark cherry scents which are complimented by earth, dried herb and leathery tobacco like notes. Rich and intensely concentrated with plenty of volume in the mouth, red to black currant, subtle liquorice and dark cherry fruits engulf the palate. Earthy tobacco, dried herb and spicy cedar characters ensue. Excellent drive with fresh acidity and a sturdy yet well integrated tannin structure lending a subtle chewy feel to the long expressive aftertaste. Drink over the next 5-6 years. Alc. 14.5%

Marchese Antinori Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG

Bernardeschi IGT Governo All’uso Toscano

Although the Governo process is very old, the wines produced in this way have only experienced a real boom in recent years. The Bernardeschi 2.60 manages the perfect balancing act between food accompaniment and party wine ... On the nose, some dark fruit and light herbal spices. Subtle floral touch. Not too jammy, but with a perfectly balanced acidity. Scaloppine al Limone, home made burger with sweet potato fries. 10 months in large wooden casks and 4 months in the bottle.

Ricasoli Colledilà Chianti classico DOCG

Bibi Graetz Testamatta Sangiovese

100% Sangiovese from more than 35-year-old vines. Dark crimson. Strong damson notes. Lots of life and raciness with an undertow of chestnuts. Very chewy. Lots of energy. Masses of acidity, and quite a bit of tannins. Score: 16.5/20 Jancis Robinson

Bibi Graetz, Testamatta, Toscana, Tuscany, Italy,

Sangiovese vines aged 50-80 years in Vincigliata, Fiesole, Rufina, Greve, Panzano and Siena. Soils rich in galestro and clay. Vinified in open-topped French barriques with 6-8 manual punchdowns per day. Aged 30 months in French oak. 1,250 cases.Mid cherry red. Lovely aroma of sour cherry allied to a more savoury quality and also a touch of oak sweetness. Graetz has achieved that fine, dry tannic texture here that I only ever find where the vineyard has been allowed to speak. Again there is a touch of oak sweetness but the fruit shines – the palate is both scented and deep in fruit but without being a fruit bomb. It is a lovely wine but I can’t help thinking the price is this high because so little is made. But is is beautifully refined, aromatic and persistent. Clear Sangiovese character but Sangiovese that is showing terrific finesse. I have not tasted older vintages but this has the freshness and the harmony to have a long life if you can keep your hands off it as it gives so much scented pleasure already. Primo Estate Sangiovese

Pian delle Vigne Brunello di Montalcino

The 2013 Pian della Vigne shows a brilliant ruby red colour. The nose is delicate and complex with notes of ripe fruit, cherries, and plums, perfectly balanced with sensations of dried and candied fruit and spices. The palate is ample with supple tannins and is enlivened by a note of vibrant acidity which fully brings out the intense persistence and pleasure of aromas. The finish offers hints of tobacco, dark chocolate, and berry fruit. An extremely elegant and bracingly savoury wine of great finesse. Acquired by the Marchesi Antinori family in 1995, the Pian Delle Vigne estate is located 6km to the South of the town of Montalcino and consists of 184 hectares of land of which 65 are planted with vines and the remainder with olive groves and woodland. The stony, clay and limestone soils are planted entirely too various Sangiovese clones on elevations between 180 and 250 metres above sea level. Two stunning wines are produced at the estate the Pian Delle Vigne Brunello di Montalcino DOCG and the Pian Delle Vigne Vigna Brunello di Montalcino DOCG Riserva, beautifully rich, balanced wines, true to their terroir and superb drinking.
