The nebbiolo grape has declined in this D.O.C. Langhe to exalt the peculiarities of the hills and bring some tradition on to tables. A young wine, but at the same time important, where the tannins with delicate softness and spicy aromas inebriate the nose, also recalling vanilla and caramelized notes. A wine that make every day a bit more special. Cascina Ghercina Langhe Nebbiolo 2016 vintage is a light ruby red colour. Deceiving to a wine rich in potential. The nose has aromas of spice, hints of hay, and tobacco. Tannins leave a pleasant feeling. Pair this wine with roasts, meats, and soft cheeses.

The Revello family’s history began in the first post-war period, when they became tenants of a farmhouse in the parish of San Martino di La Morra. In the 1960s, they began to replant vineyards, which later produced the first bottle of Barolo by Giovanni Revello & Figli. This marked a period of expansion for Revello with their acquisition of the Gattera and Conca sites. In the 1990s, brothers Carlo and Lorenzo (Enzo) Revello decided to divide the company to facilitate the inception of their respective children. Enzo Revello later established the Fratelli Revello winery in Annunziata, where he and his children Simone and Elena now make wines together. Since releasing their first Fratelli Revello Barolo in 1993, a blend of fruit from all their vineyards, four single cru-inspired wines appeared and defined Revello’s identity as a brand capable of producing single-site wine of inimitable quality. Today, the Fratelli Revello wines benefit from the utmost level of care and selection process in the vineyards. The resulting organic wines display an undeniable approachability and fruit generosity unspoiled thanks to a gentle touch in the cellar. Due to Gattera’s substantial surface area (over 30 hectares), its altitude (240-250 meters) and exposure vary significantly. Revello’s portion of Gattera is at its western-most part, where the vineyard faces southeast, not too far from the homestead and Conca vineyard. This is the coolest site with two distinct parts, one facing southeast, the other, historically known as Turna Langa, facing south. This is a rather feminine rendition of Barolo offering balance, elegance, and delicate spice. The vines were planted between 1960 and 1995 on calcareous and clayey soil. The single hectare vineyard faces south-east at 250 meters above sea level, and south-west at 240 meters above sea level. The grapes were hand harvested and transferred into horizontal roto-fermenters where they remained for 7 to 8 days on skins. It was fermented in stainless steel tanks for 10 to 15 days. Malolactic conversion also happened in stainless steel. It was aged in large Slavonian oak barrels for 24 months. A beautiful and iconic vineyard in La Morra, Gattera is known as much for its iconic Lebanese Cedar that dominates the hillside as it is for producing wines of litheness and elegance. Revello’s Gattera displays wonderful balance every vintage, and walks the line between fruitiness and spice with sweet tannins and fresh acid.

Back in 2009, Justin Bubb had spent almost a decade in Italy leading the transformation of the winemaking at famed winery, Castello Di Gabbiano. He had been sent there to help improve the winemaking and also be a conduit for the Australian owners at the time. Originally only planning to stay for a short period, Justin was instrumental in growing the winery. He also was able to spend time working vintage in some of the most famed wine regions of Italy including Piedmonte, Veneto and Sicilia. His time in Europe had also helped him see there was an opportunity to bring great quality Italian wines back to Australia. Having decided to return to Australia with Anna Pooley his new wife, he sketched out very briefly wanted to do. He wanted to produce great value Italian wines, to shake any stuffy stereotypes of Italian wines, by offering contemporary styles that suited the wine savvy palates of Australians. He also wanted to continue working with the amazing growers and connections he had with his adopted country of Italy. Taking an Italian nickname for a tool that measures ‘baume’ in fruit, Babo was born. The vineyards it Piedmonte where this fruit is sourced are layered clay and limestone soils near the famed town of Castiglione Falletto. The fruit was selected from vineyards 300-400 m above sea level - mostly Southwest facing, with fantastic quality fruit. 100% Nebbiolo, handpicked fruit was destemmed with 6-8 day maceration at a controlled temperature, pumped over twice a day. Short aging in large concrete tanks completes this wine making journey. Bright purple and garnet highlights. On the nose delightful floral bouquet. Medium body, classic bright red berries, a little tar, roses and spice. Lovely weighted tannin gives a the perfect persistent finish. Delicious.

Pio Cesare have been making wines in their ancient cellars in central Alba for 141 years, from their vineyards based primarily in Barolo and Barbaresco. Today, fifth generation Federica Boffa with her cousin Cesare Benvenuto lead this prestigious estate, after the untimely passing of Pio Boffa in 2021 after 40 years as the face of Pio Cesare. The winegrowing is sustainable and the winemaking largely traditional resulting in wines of great elegance, structure and purity. The Pio Cesare family’s unique winemaking method stresses minimal intervention to produce wines of particularly supple flavour expression. A ceaseless devotion to the individuality of each of the region’s wines informs Pio Cesare's choices in the cellar: shorter maceration, separate lot fermentation, judicious selection for barrel and large cask aging, and bottling schedules determined by the ideal structure of each wine. This allows Pio Cesare to craft wines of varying weight, ageability and drinkability as determined by the vineyard rather than market fashion. Mosconi is thought to be one of the true “grand crus” of the commune of Monforte d’Alba, itself one the most prestigious areas within Barolo. Its soils and microclimates allow Nebbiolo to grow exceptionally well and produce styles of Barolo with great structure, incredibly unique and distinctive aromas, and big opulent tannins that are accessible and ripen, silky and rich. This is a single-vineyard Barolo from grapes sourced from the oldest Nebbiolo vines (1947 and 1971) in the family's famous Mosconi vineyard in Monforte d’Alba at an altitude of 390 metres. The Nebbiolo harvest began mid-October, and immediately showed all the hallmarks of a ‘classic’ year – excellent tannin ripeness and balance, foretelling wines of structure with great aging potential. The grapes are softly crushed and destemmed at the winery's ancient cellars in the centre of Alba. Fermented in two stainless steel tanks for ten days: the skin cap, frequently punched down, reached a maximum temperature of 86°F. Maceration on the skins for over 30 days. The fruit for the Pio Cesare Barolo Mosconi comes from a small selection of the oldest Nebbiolo vines of the family-owned vineyards at the Mosconi, in Monforte d’Alba, one of the most prestigious areas of the entire Barolo region, very well known for great complexity, elegance and longevity. The wine was fermented in stainless steel tanks. Long skin contact maceration for 30 days at high temperatures. Then aged in big French and Slavonian oak “botti” for at least 2 years; for a small amount in barriques as well.

The focus here for this wine by Fletcher is on what Nebbiolo as a variety can do in Australian terroir. The philosophy behind these wines is to de-construct tradition and start afresh. Driven with obsession and going against the grain, Ann from Fletcher had the foresight to plant small acreage to mixed clones of Nebbiolo in 1998, which officially makes this some of the oldest Nebbiolo in Australia. Meticulously manicured, this vineyard, after the green harvest, is lucky if it produces 2 tonnes to the acre, and the fruit it produces is floral, rich and backed by Nebbiolo's superior tannins.

His son Roberto succeeded him, but it was Robertos daughter Paola, on her return from Milano to Dogliani at the end of the 1980s, who with tenacity, enthusiasm and significant investment, re-launched this historic brand and went about improving wine quality. Today it is her son, fourth generation Matteo Sardagna, who is at the helm. Long sojourns in the Langhe as a child with his grandfather and mother left Matteo with a deeply-rooted passion for the familys values and customs. Today the winery is equipped with unique cement egg-like fermenting tanks, and botti of varying sizes and age so that Matteo and his team can produce wines which reflect their terroir, and the traditional style of the region and the estate.

First produced in 1911. The fruit for Massolino's classic Nebbiolo cuvée is selected from seven sites, representing roughly seven hectares of prime-sited Serralunga vineyards. The oldest vines that feed this bottling are 55 years old (the youngest are 10), and it spends 24 months in large Slovenian oak (only).

Pasquale Pelissero is a small, family-run winery that originated in a garage under the guidance of "Papa" Pasquale, a trailblazing figure in Neive known for being among the first to independently bottle and market his wines. Despite being a traditionalist, Pasquale remained receptive to new winemaking and cellar management methods. The vineyards are highly esteemed, often attracting visits from fellow producers in the region. Nestled near the summit of Bricco San Giuliano hill, the cellar is entirely enveloped by Pelissero vineyards. Following Pasquale's passing in 2007, his daughter Ornella has admirably upheld the family's legacy, managing all aspects of the vineyards and cellar, with her only innovation being the acquisition of a temperature-controlled fermentation tank. Their Bricco San Giuliano Barbaresco originates from an 8-hectare plot situated approximately 400 meters above sea level and undergoes exclusive aging in large casks, while the Dolcetto, characterized by its plum notes and intriguing hints of flint and smoke, matures in stainless steel. Situated in the historically significant and picturesque Neive, the winery's annual output totals around 15,000 bottles. The estate is a proud member of "Biotipicità," a recently established consortium of Langhe producers committed to sustainable farming practices in accordance with the Italian "lotta integrata" regulation. Crafted from 100% Nebbiolo grapes, the Pasquale Pelissero Langhe Nebbiolo 2022 eloquently expresses the unique terroir of its origin. Cultivated in vineyards with a south-west exposure at an elevation of 400 meters, the grapes thrive in marly-calcareous soil and are nurtured using the Guyot training system, reflecting the vineyards' 10-year maturity. This wine entices with a captivating pale garnet red hue and emanates an enchanting bouquet of rose, violet, small fruits, black pepper and cardamom. On the palate, it delivers a decisive, fresh and bold experience, making it a delightful choice for shared moments.
