Bibi Graetz Testamatta Sangiovese

100% Sangiovese from more than 35-year-old vines. Dark crimson. Strong damson notes. Lots of life and raciness with an undertow of chestnuts. Very chewy. Lots of energy. Masses of acidity, and quite a bit of tannins. Score: 16.5/20 Jancis Robinson

Bibi Graetz, Testamatta, Toscana, Tuscany, Italy,

Sangiovese vines aged 50-80 years in Vincigliata, Fiesole, Rufina, Greve, Panzano and Siena. Soils rich in galestro and clay. Vinified in open-topped French barriques with 6-8 manual punchdowns per day. Aged 30 months in French oak. 1,250 cases.Mid cherry red. Lovely aroma of sour cherry allied to a more savoury quality and also a touch of oak sweetness. Graetz has achieved that fine, dry tannic texture here that I only ever find where the vineyard has been allowed to speak. Again there is a touch of oak sweetness but the fruit shines – the palate is both scented and deep in fruit but without being a fruit bomb. It is a lovely wine but I can’t help thinking the price is this high because so little is made. But is is beautifully refined, aromatic and persistent. Clear Sangiovese character but Sangiovese that is showing terrific finesse. I have not tasted older vintages but this has the freshness and the harmony to have a long life if you can keep your hands off it as it gives so much scented pleasure already. Fuligni Riserva

Gorelli Le Pottazine, Brunello di Montalcino

Pian delle Vigne Brunello di Montalcino

The 2013 Pian della Vigne shows a brilliant ruby red colour. The nose is delicate and complex with notes of ripe fruit, cherries, and plums, perfectly balanced with sensations of dried and candied fruit and spices. The palate is ample with supple tannins and is enlivened by a note of vibrant acidity which fully brings out the intense persistence and pleasure of aromas. The finish offers hints of tobacco, dark chocolate, and berry fruit. An extremely elegant and bracingly savoury wine of great finesse. Acquired by the Marchesi Antinori family in 1995, the Pian Delle Vigne estate is located 6km to the South of the town of Montalcino and consists of 184 hectares of land of which 65 are planted with vines and the remainder with olive groves and woodland. The stony, clay and limestone soils are planted entirely too various Sangiovese clones on elevations between 180 and 250 metres above sea level. Two stunning wines are produced at the estate the Pian Delle Vigne Brunello di Montalcino DOCG and the Pian Delle Vigne Vigna Brunello di Montalcino DOCG Riserva, beautifully rich, balanced wines, true to their terroir and superb drinking.

Casanova Di Neri Cerretalto

Cerretalto is a single vineyard Brunello from one of the very best sites in the region. The wine is made only in exceptional years when the quality of fruit warrants. The best fruit from the site is hand harvested, sorted, destemmed and crushed before undergoing wild yeast fermentation in open vats. The temperature controlled fermentation lasts 3-4 weeks and then the wine is transferred to oak barrels for 31 months followed by a further 30 months in bottle. The wine is kept back in the winery for 6 years before release.
