The Clarendon Vineyard has sold select parcels to Penfolds for Grange and to Hardys for their equivalent white flagship, the Eileen Hardy Chardonnay.

This intense, gorgeously scented, rich and voluminous Cabernet blend is typified by mocha, espresso, blackcurrant, truffle aromas, savoury new oak and fine-grained tannins. The Cabernet Sauvignon dominant Terra Rossa First Growth, with a small proportion of Cabernet Franc is made along traditional Bordelais lines with extended maceration and maturation in a combination of tightly-grained new and used French oak for 20 to 24 months.

The Bin 389 style evolved as a result of experiments, by Max Schubert, in the 1950s to develop a highly individual wine using a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz with compatible oak treatment. Bin 389 combines the elegance of Cabernet Sauvignon with the richness of Shiraz and demonstrates the traditional Penfolds' trademark - balance between fruit and oak, giving the wine character and longevity.

The nose is intense and multi-faceted. Notes of blackcurrant and cedar are interwoven into a sophisticated expression that constantly intrigues. Harmony and balance are immediately apparent in this elegant, medium to full-bodied wine. The palate is assertive yet refined, with concentrated flavours of blackcurrant, berry and olive supported by subtle cedar spice from the oak.
