Akkeshi began distilling in 2016, based in the Akkeshi District of Hokkaido, the concept of distilling and maturing single malt in Japan’s northern wilderness traces back to the very first plans of Masataka Taketsuru, a pioneer of the country’s early whisky production. No.5 in the 24 Sekki Series. Ritto is the season when ‘winter begins’ and the first snows make their presence felt in the northern countries. This bottling is exclusively Akkeshi’s own malt, distilled from locally grown Hokkaido barley in 2018, then matured in Mizunara oak and ex-Pinot Noir cask. This has the classic threads of Akkeshi’s iodine and smoke-wreathed malt, intertwined with fresh vanilla, caramel and a hint of liquorice. There’s a perfect balance of sweetness, saltiness and smoke on the palate. Perhaps reflecting the season, it’s a deeper expression, finishing with a dry grip on the sweet/ savoury length.

The third release in Macallan's annual wood-focused series called on the talents of Master Perfumer, Roja Dove to provide his remarkable sensory knowledge in describing the distinctive aromas peculiar to oak casks. Whisky maker, Bob Dalgarno subsequently used Roja's articulation of aromas to help shape the final character of Edition No.3. In short, the approach they took was the same as creating a great perfume. The final result is a combination of six American and European oak casks (first-fill Hudosa butts, American oak; European and American oak refill butts; first-fill Tevasa butts and puncheons made from European oak; first-fill bourbon hogsheads; first-fill Tevesa hogsheads; and first-fill bourbon barrels.) By all reports, this is another excellent addition that promises lifted floral notes and a deliciously, sweet, fruity flavour profile. Bottled at 48.3% Alc./Vol.

The oldest expression in our peated range and a rare opportunity to experience a peated Speyside single malt dating back to the 1980s. Crafted from densely peated malted barley, BenRiach Authenticus aged 30 years is a more intense Speyside malt which carries a delightful balance of WILD HONEY and PEAT on the nose. The combination of the SOFT, CREAMY VANILLA, SUMMER FRUITS and SLIGHT HINT OF COCOA coax the palate, while the INFUSED SWEET PEAT builds gradually to complete the unique character.

This 30 year old Glenfarclas Single Malt has been matured in some the best oak casks available to Glenfarclas. Produced in the heart of Speyside, Whiskies from this area are generally known for their elegance and complexity. Dark amber-gold colour leads to the rich, intense combination of sherried fruit, Christmas spices, peat smoke and dark chocolate. The warm and rich flavours gradually melt into a lingering fruit and nut chocolate feel on the palate. The finish is long lasting and velvety smooth.

Talisker, one of the remotest distilleries in the world, is situated on the storm lashed Isle of Skye and has a colourful history dating back to 1830. Denounced by the local clergy, praised by none other than Robert Louis Stevenson and even suffering a still-room fire in 1960, Talisker has survived and today produces some of the smoothest and character full malts in Scotland. The 25 Year Old is sweet and mild to begin, with some acidity and saltiness. Extraordinary flavour development then envelopes the palate that becomes dry and minerally with a mild dusting of ground white pepper.

He enrolled at the University of Glasgow, took chemistry courses and then apprenticed at three Scotch distilleries. In 1920 Masataka returned to Japan with his Scottish wife Jessie Roberta (Rita). The two had married earlier that year and Rita decided to immigrate to Japan to support her husband’s dream. However after returning to Japan, Masataka and Rita were heartbroken to find out that Settsu Shuzo, the company which invested in Masataka to learn in Scotland, had to abandon its plan to produce genuine whisky in Japan due to recessions after World War I. In the meantime another company, Kotobukiya Limited (Suntory), was in search for someone who could conduct whisky production. Being the only Japanese who knew how to produce whisky at that time, Masataka was hired by Kotobukiya in 1923 to direct building the Yamazaki Distillery. There he led the project and devoted himself to producing Japan’s first genuine whisky. These limited edition 2 bottle set of the Yoichi and Miyagiko has been finished in Nikka’s apple brandy casks and bottled in 2020 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Masataka and Rita’s marriage in 1920. At the foundation in 1934, apple products helped Nikka to keep the business sustainable while the first whiskies were maturing, just like Rita supported Masataka’s dream. Both of these whiskies have the delicate aroma of apples, with the expression showcasing a beautiful harmony of finesse and sweetness brought by apple brandy casks. The Yoichi single malt’s original characteristics appear such as rich malt flavors, gentle peaty notes and smokiness and the Miyagikyo single malt’s has its original characteristics such as distinctive hints of Sherry and spiciness like cinnamon.
