Akkeshi began distilling in 2016, based in the Akkeshi District of Hokkaido, the concept of distilling and maturing single malt in Japan’s northern wilderness traces back to the very first plans of Masataka Taketsuru, a pioneer of the country’s early whisky production. No.5 in the 24 Sekki Series. Ritto is the season when ‘winter begins’ and the first snows make their presence felt in the northern countries. This bottling is exclusively Akkeshi’s own malt, distilled from locally grown Hokkaido barley in 2018, then matured in Mizunara oak and ex-Pinot Noir cask. This has the classic threads of Akkeshi’s iodine and smoke-wreathed malt, intertwined with fresh vanilla, caramel and a hint of liquorice. There’s a perfect balance of sweetness, saltiness and smoke on the palate. Perhaps reflecting the season, it’s a deeper expression, finishing with a dry grip on the sweet/ savoury length.

Johnnie Walker King George V was created to celebrate the Royal Warrant given in 1934 to the Walker family to mark the exceptional qualities of their whiskies. The King George has more restraint and sophistication courtesy of the Port Ellen Distillery component that is powerful, slow and resonant. It initially shows a profound smoky aroma followed by sweet, fresh fruit (apples, pears, bananas) malt characteristics; developing into rich dried fruit and spicy complexity, raisins, figs and cinnamon. The palate is smooth with a rich, fruity sweetness. Warming with subtle flavours of sandalwood and smoke. Taste is powerful, complex, rich yet smooth. A mouth warming and lingering rich peaty finish.

This 30 year old Glenfarclas Single Malt has been matured in some the best oak casks available to Glenfarclas. Produced in the heart of Speyside, Whiskies from this area are generally known for their elegance and complexity. Dark amber-gold colour leads to the rich, intense combination of sherried fruit, Christmas spices, peat smoke and dark chocolate. The warm and rich flavours gradually melt into a lingering fruit and nut chocolate feel on the palate. The finish is long lasting and velvety smooth.

The GlenAllachie Distillery, situated in Aberlour in Speyside, was established in 1967 and designed by William-Delme Evans, with construction carried out by Mackinlay McPherson. The distillery was meticulously designed to be almost entirely gravity-fed, reducing energy consumption. After Mackinlay McPherson became part of Invergordon in 1985, the distillery was mothballed until Campbell Distillers acquired it in 1989 and recommenced production in April of that year. A nose of black grapes, raisins and dark chocolate orange, with hints of coffee and stewed fruits. The Macallan Edition No. 5 is a homage to the diversity and complexity of natural colour, celebrating Macallan’s commitment to natural whisky. It follows Editions No 1 and No 2, focused on cask influence; Edition No 3, which explored the impact of aroma; and Edition No 4, which was focused on structure.
